How the Song Came to Be

In 1981, David and Sherri Bird were neighbors of ours. Nosotros all lived in academy pupil housing at the time. As we got to know the Birds, I showed Sherri a tune I wrote, that had been used in a stage musical chosen Can't Stand up Even so! The song was never included in the live production. At that place were some reservations about it, so I took information technology out of the show. The show seemed to have its run (45 performances at Robert Redford'south Sundance Outdoor Theater—now defunct), with no other futurity prospects, then it reinforced my thought of removing from the show and remaking it as a Christmas vocal.

Sherri took the photocopy of my hand-fatigued manuscript with the crossed out original lyrics and said, "Let me call up about it. If it'due south going to be a Christmas vocal, it needs to exist something different."

Several months went by. I wondered if annihilation would come of it, just I received an unexpected telephone call around 10 pm on a Sunday evening.

Dan: "Hi."

David: "Are you in your PJs yet?"

Dan:(quite perplexed) "No, (intermission, contemplating hanging up) are you?"

David: "You mean I didn't catch you in bed? Well, what are you lot doing and then?"

Dan: "Who is this?"

David: "How shortly tin y'all be over here?"

Dan: "I don't recall I want to be over there."

David: "Sherri finished the vocal. How shortly tin y'all exist here?!"

Dan: "Oh! This is Bird! We'll be at that place in 10 minutes!"

Nosotros all sabbatum down and Sherri sat at the piano and played and sang. She choked up a little when she sang "do not despair, your star is yet in that location." In fact, nosotros were all unexpectedly emotional almost the bulletin of this song. Niggling did I know how my life would change in the coming years. I had no idea of the catastrophic losses of loved ones, homes, holding and income ahead of me. I couldn't have ever predicted that I would exist shunned past people and organizations I thought would ever love and have me. I had no idea that I would i twenty-four hour period, myself, wait in the sky in acrimony and wonder why such things happened not just to me but to those I loved.

But the years have changed me. For the better. I have learned that my star is still there. I take learned that song wasn't written as a gift for everyone else, it was written as a gift to me, too. No ane escapes the awful stuff in life. But information technology is how we choose to permit it touch on us that defines our path. We can swallow our own bitterness and hate and thus poison ourselves and everyone around us, or we tin can larn the lessons life has handed united states and detect our peace. Find that connection with that star that never stops shining, the Presence in the universe that keeps united states from ever being alone, those "smiling eyes, shining up at me."

Loved reading almost the groundwork of this cute song. I accept choked up many a time singing that phrase "do not despair, your star is still there" when I felt across hope and in deep despair. Give thanks you for this song that has fed my soul and helped heal my heart.

When I was a teenager in the late fourscore'south and early on xc's, my stake used to hold a Christmas Cantata every year, and I would participate. This song was chosen one year by our director. I used to memorize the music considering I hated holding it. My sis (also a office of the choir) and I would sing this vocal in harmony together for years. We forgot the afterwards parts, and the name of the song, but it always had special meaning for me, and during hard times throughout my life, I would sing as much as I could remember. Today, I googled the first similar "the nighttime was long, we traveled far" and establish this website. I cannot access youtube here from piece of work, but even subsequently 20+ years, I could sing every note equally I finally had all the words in front of me. Tears are streaming downwardly my confront as I sing it over again and again in full now. I just wanted you to know that your song has been close to my centre for more than 2 decades. Thank you.

I've been looking for this song! I ABSOLUTELY Beloved IT! Our loftier schoolhouse choir (directed by a David Bird!) has our students sing information technology, oft! Makes me weep, every time! It gives me chills, and brings tears to my eyes, each and every time, as well! Ane sister, for our sis's church social Christmas dinner, sang this as a solo, and I STILL recall how beautifully she sang information technology! Thank Yous for posting this! Certain enjoyed hearing it, again!

Robert Redford'southward theater at Sundance, though not hosting quite equally robust a summer theater season as information technology once did, is far from defunct. There are still concerts there every year in the summer by regional and national acts. It'southward a lovely, lovey infinite in which to see a testify, and in which to perform one. And people still accept opportunity for both.
